In short

The red 'L' plate displayed on a UK car being driven by a provisional-licence holder.

An L-plate is the square red-and-white 'L' badge that must be displayed on the front and rear of a UK car being driven by a learner. Welsh learners can use 'D' for 'Dysgwr' instead.

L-plates must be removed within 24 hours of passing the test. P-plates (green) are optional for newly-qualified drivers.
