In short

A mock driving test is a full-test simulation done with your instructor (or a calm friend) using one of the real published routes at your centre and the DVSA marking sheet. Drive it like the real thing, mark every fault, debrief at the end. Do one mock 10 days out and one mock 3 days out.

Setup

Pick one of the harder published routes at your test centre. Print the DL25 marking sheet (or its US equivalent). Set a 40-minute timer. Brief the instructor: "Don't help me; mark what an examiner would."

Run it like the real test

Show-me tell-me at the start. Eyesight check at 20 metres. Drive the full route. Independent driving section using the sat-nav. One emergency stop midway. One reversing manoeuvre.

Debrief

Count driving faults. Identify the one habit responsible for the most marks. Make that the focus of your next two practice sessions. Repeat the mock 3 days out — you should see fewer faults of the same type.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a mock test alone?
Partially — you can drive the route and self-mark, but you can't replicate the examiner-in-the-car pressure. Use a calm friend or relative who'll mark honestly.
How many mock tests should I do?
Two is the sweet spot — one early enough that you have time to fix patterns (10 days out) and one close to the test (3 days out) to calibrate calm.
