Night before

  • Sleep at your usual time (don't try to sleep extra-early — it backfires).
  • Lay out: provisional licence, glasses, comfortable shoes, jacket.
  • Re-read the show-me-tell-me list one final time.
  • Set two alarms.
  • Avoid alcohol entirely.

Morning of

  • Light breakfast (no heavy carbs).
  • If you have a habit drink, keep it — same routine, same caffeine.
  • Arrive at the test centre 15 minutes early.
  • Eyesight test from 20 metres — bring glasses if you need them.
  • Adjust mirrors and seat before the examiner sits in.

Just before pulling away

  • Doors closed, seatbelt on, handbrake on, neutral.
  • Full mirror sweep before move-off.
  • Pull away in your own time — the examiner doesn't time the start.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best breakfast before a driving test?
Light, familiar, and high-protein — porridge, eggs on toast, or your usual. Avoid heavy fry-ups or anything you wouldn't normally eat.
Can I have caffeine before the test?
Yes — but keep it to your normal amount. Doubling up creates jitter that can show up as oversteering or rushed manoeuvres.
