In short
A mock driving test is a full-test simulation done with your instructor on one of the real routes at your centre, using the DL25 marking sheet. Do one mock 10 days out and one mock 3 days out. The biggest predictor of test calm.
The four-step mock-test plan
- Pick the hardest published route at your centre. Driving Routes lists every route with a 1–5 difficulty rating. Choose the hardest one to simulate the worst-case test.
- Print the DL25 marking sheet. Search 'DL25 driving test marking sheet PDF' — print one copy for your instructor or a calm friend to fill in.
- Run the route like the real test. Show-me tell-me at the start. Eyesight check at 20 metres. 40-minute drive. One emergency stop midway. One reversing manoeuvre.
- Debrief and target the next session. Count the driving faults. Identify the one habit responsible for most of them. Make that the focus of your next two lessons.
What to mark
Use the DL25 marking sheet (UK) or your state DMV's equivalent (US). Count driving faults, serious faults, and dangerous faults exactly as an examiner would. 15 driving faults or 1 serious is a fail — same as the real thing.
What to debrief
Look for the one habit responsible for most of the marks. Almost always it's a missed mirror check, a hesitation at a clear junction, or late signalling. Make that habit the focus of your next two practice sessions.
