In short
A solid white line at a stop sign or red light — you must stop with your front bumper before this line.
A limit line is a solid white line painted across the road at a stop sign or red light. You must come to a complete stop with your front bumper before (not on top of) the line.
Stopping past the limit line is a fault in most US states.
