Night before

  • Sleep at your usual time.
  • Lay out: learner's permit, proof of insurance, registration, glasses if you need them.
  • Quick re-read of your state's driver handbook.
  • Set two alarms.
  • Avoid alcohol entirely.

Morning of

  • Light breakfast.
  • Arrive at the DMV 15 minutes early.
  • Vision check if your state runs one.
  • Pre-trip vehicle inspection — point out wipers, lights, signals, parking brake.

Just before pulling away

  • Doors closed, seatbelt on, mirrors set.
